Look up for Angels and Unicorns

So all of these photos were taken by pointing my camera upwards towards the heavens in Edinburgh’s Old Town. I found so many interesting creatures, from angels to dragons, to unicorns. It’s simply incredible what’s up there above our heads if we just take the time to look. Old Edinburgh is packed with ancient symbols, and perhaps you can begin to see where J K Rowling got her inspiration for many of her magical creatures.

Ailsa’s weekly photo challenge up, got me searching through my photos, and Edinburgh has some fascinating rooftops to share, as seen in her post. I’ve added a few more along with some carved details from the inside and outside of St Giles. The medieval crown spire of the cathedral is incredibly delicate stone work, built in 1495, and the skyline of the surrounding buildings is so varied that it seems as though no roof pattern was ever repeated.

There is so much around us in every moment which we don’t even see, because we’re not looking carefully, or curiously enough. Being open to what’s above our heads and below our feet as we walk the earth, brings a richness and depth to our everyday life. I think of it as opening my eyes and my soul wide to the sensory world, and to each moment and each step, to each breath and each sight. No moment is ever repeated, so go on, open your eyes wide, look up to the heavens, and drink in the world.

Hi, I'm Seonaid, and I share my home on the shores of Loch Ness deep in the Scottish Highlands with my husband, my son and a collection of dogs, hens and a cat. I love art which is here now and gone tomorrow...like food and nature...but also have a passion for vintage and the ancient past! Nature is my favourite muse, with her wild ever shifting seasons. I have been using and teaching mindfulness and relaxation for over 20 years, and have yet to become any sort of expert :-) I'm a Psychotherapist and Cancer Support Specialist in Maggies Highlands

  1. You gave me an idea, I’ll go hunting for dragons and unicorns in the little town where I live here in Italy. Dragons should be easy, but I bet there are unicorns too.

    • That’s great, will look forward to seeing some Italian dragons and unicorns. After I wrote this post I decided that I would go and capture some more of Edinburghs unicorns. Haven’t done it yet but it’s on my list of photo destinations…so watch this space 🙂

Dear greenmackenzie, Lovely! Well here’s a present for you then. (I actually remembered you talking about Unicorns and Scotland when I took this at Aberdeen University). I thought of making him my FB ID photo, but haven’t got there …..
