Seed Fall

20131104-231721.jpg
Winged seeds ripen in the growing damp, their flesh illuminated by the failing sun.
Before the week is done they will take flight, swarming into lights last gasp.
Spinning moth like into the dying years flame.
A golden flutter, trusting the turning earth.
Hoping to rise from winters ashes.

Eerie remnants

20131102-100020.jpg
Tucked against an ancient stone wall, in the crumbling city of the dead, he looms through time. Countless centuries of bones lie white beneath the cold earth, and yet still he stands.
Edinburgh’s great and good, reduced to memories of stone,
Yet he makes fresh impressions still,
On unsuspecting minds.

Taken in Greyfriars cemetery, Edinburgh.

Veiled Visions

20131030-220942.jpg
We walked slowly through the rising mist and its muted world. Colours and sounds subdued in its soft breath as it closed in around us. The world was shrinking and yet the gathering haze seemed to soothe away our thoughts. They lifted like soft mist from trees and mountains, leaving only the space of peace. The veiled horizon hid unknown worries, and here beyond the veil lay only calm stillness. We waited for we knew not what, and even the wind was breathless. There was a beauty in this uncertainty, as though the mist protected us in silence.

20131030-222234.jpg
Yet it also hid approaching dangers, and she appeared almost before our eyes, emerging from the near edge of our vision. There was no chance to turn, or hide in busy occupation. The sudden surprise left us exposed and revealed, and she arched a knowing brow. Just in that one twinkle of her black eye we were 10 years old again, powerless and undefended. A pounding heart sent panic racing through our brain, and all calm fled to the distant corners of thought. Vision blurred and the earth spun, and when breath began moving through our shuddering body once more she was long gone. Re absorbed into the grey mist. A wraith of our past, with ever watchful eyes piercing our present.

20131030-223502.jpg
We walked back along the line of chestnut trees, entangled in mist and ghosts past. The movement of air through our bodies, and the firm damp earth beneath our feet, pulled us steadily into the present. We grew taller and more certain with each step, and each breath, until we had walked back into ourselves, leaving the past to itself and the rising veil of mist. Sometimes it’s best to stay firmly in the here and now, holding what we do know gently in our hands. This is all we can be sure of in a world made of the unknown.

Golden Horizons

20131029-075512.jpg
The day had brewed herself into a blend of light and dark, and now here at her very edge all was revealed. Away from the tightly woven centre, gaps and spaces opened allowing golden light to pour through in unexpected, unplanned patterns. She no longer had the energy to hold it all together, and so the mysterious chaos of liminal space seeped in, and with it the wild beauty of the edge.

20131029-080837.jpg
The golden horizon, where the triple edges of earth, sky and day meet, offers the potential of freshly dreamed change. Anything is possible from the edges and liminal spaces, where nothing is fixed or certain. The next moment is unknown, and with this, hope can pour into our hearts, along with its shadow fear. All is changing in a beautiful dance between light and dark, and certainty is dissolved into the spaces. Do we dare to be swept in to the beauty, releasing our threads of certainty into the challenge of change.

20131029-082822.jpg
The day surrendered and golden light poured unbridled across the water and the sky. Liquid treasure from the distant horizon, dazzled us with a velvet wave of hope and promise. Swept into the eternal unseen night, lying just beyond the curve of earth, we fell into the golden river of the falling sun flowing into eternity.

Light Fall

20131021-105715.jpg
Light fall over a deliciously brooding sea.
Bruised by the rise and fall of the day
She plots to reflect her darkness upwards
And swallow the dazzling light.
He has other plans
Spilling his infinite light across sky and grass
With careless abandon.
And on they dance into her dark embrace.

Green Hues: Galashiels

20131019-215230.jpg
The emerald forest glimmered with pools of golden light, and long shadows were pulled far across the earth. Even the air was infused with green light, and with each breath a deep sense of peace flowed. The forest itself sighed with perfect contentment, and birdsong drifted through the spaces between leaves.

20131019-224419.jpg
Ivy tenderly climbed around the trees, moving towards the light. Her green leaves will remain, cloaking the bare winter branches in the months to come. But for now her glossy leaves shared the forest with summers fluttering dress.

20131019-225937.jpg
Green tunnels lure us onwards, deeper into the heart of the woods, through dappled shade and whispering leaves. We barely notice the hushed hints of autumns arrival along the enchanted path.

20131019-231636.jpg
Then, without warning the trees end, and a drystone wall draws a line between the green of the trees and the green of the rolling hills. Sheep scattered like flowers among the velvet green blades of the grass, cast their own long shadows. Emerald hills flow in waves towards the horizon, miles in the distance.

20131019-232111.jpg
Behind us shadows dance in the glow of the fading sun, and shapes begin to form in the gathering darkness.

20131019-232324.jpg
Ahead of us the soft green hills roll onwards into the future, hiding the earths magic beneath their velvet slopes. The season turns under the hooves of the sheep and their lengthening shadows, as it has for thousands of years. The eternal earth and her summer greens have woven another perfect tale of emerald delight on the slopes of Gala Hill, deep in the Scottish Borders.

Autumns Spell

20131014-201059.jpg
She flies in on the leading feathers of the geese, and she dims the suns light. It becomes softer, and the shadows limbs stretch long across the land. The heat is drawn out of the sunlight, almost imperceptibly to begin with, but degree by degree the earth begins to cool. This cooling will crumple the liquid gold grass, folding the precious seeds back into the soil, but I’m getting ahead of myself now. In the early days of the season the light seems to glow with jewel like intensity, the warmth of its colour making up for the cooling air.

20131014-212405.jpg
Tiny patches at the edges of the leaves begin to lose their greenness. She weaves it out, folding brown and gold threads back in through the trees veins. Under her slender fingers green decays, spreading out from tiny ochre spots, into crisp dry death.

20131014-212858.jpg
But her spell is not all loss, she weaves fruits and nuts to rounded ripeness. The plump shiny bodies of the nuts glisten in the fading sun, a moment of glory before the earth draws them back to herself. Was there ever a colour more magnificent than chestnut brown, set in soft green velvet.

20131014-213414.jpg
Perhaps the royal purple of the elderberries in their luscious glory can outshine the glossy browns of nuts. Gleaming like glass beads embroidered among the bright green silks. Their juice as rich as gold, gathered in perfect purple drops.

20131014-213905.jpg
While overhead her sweet breath turns green to red. A dazzling cloak to wrap the earth against the chill of the long nights ahead, and the clear blue skies. Autumns blue is cold and bright, bringing seeds to fruition and leaves to their end. Her spell is so filled with bounty and colour and beauty, that we barely notice death as he creeps across the earth, rolling the seasons forwards. Autumns spell weaves the ends of summers threads into the edges of winter, in a soft colour filled cloth to enchant and delight our senses.

The Beauty of Infinity

20131012-104928.jpg
We went down to the beach late one day, and found the sun was punching tiny holes in the rumbling cotton clouds. The effect was dazzling with infinite golden shafts, rays of sunlight, fanning out across the rolling waves. It seemed that the light once through was trapped to bounce forever between ocean and cloud, leaving us a shimmering mirror of lights beauty, reflecting endlessly back to itself. An infinite reflection on the silver sea.

20131012-105904.jpg
Looking away towards our right the light was softer, muffled and absorbed by the gentlest looking storm clouds. They were gathering with barely a whisper of wind, and with such infinite patience that we hardly noticed. Everything seemed so still, even the waves were sleepy, slowly licking the soft sand with just a sigh. The light was butter soft, and the horizon rolled away into the timeless distance. It was as though infinity had filled the space and slowed down time to a gentle trickle. An infinite moment of perfect beauty at the edge of the endless sea.

20131012-110908.jpg
Then, before our eyes, as the sun continued his daily fall towards the horizon, the clouds thickened enough to change. The sky was divided between left and right, and in that liminal space where the two edges meet, beauty fell from the sky. Dark clouds created soft rain over the sea, shrouding the horizon in mysterious infinity, hiding the edges of the earth. In a moment of utter brilliance the sunlight was fractured into all its parts, and a rainbow tumbled out over the waves. It’s magical beauty was reflected from the still water of the sea, which held her breath in wonder. The infinite hope of life was bringing beauty and change into our world, and it was all happening right before our eyes. The sun and the sea had woven their endless, timeless spell of healing, and in the unweaving of the light, beauty had fallen into the world.

Light Seed

20131011-085038.jpg
A seed of light
Birthed from tender petals
Released into the world.
Eternal recreation,
Innocence and fresh hope,
All at the mercy of the worlds sharp claws.
Yet its beauty saves the tiny seed.
It catches our breath
Holds us spell bound in wonder.
Thus we see beautys purpose revealed in the petals of a pink flower.
