Winters Grip – Cailleach Bhearra

Snow on the Pentlands- Jan 26 2013

Snowy Pentlands

Frozen hills

The Cailleach’s icy grip holds the earth as firm as iron. Her cold blue skin reflects the chilly sky above, and her frozen blood is as hard as all the water across the earths face. She squeezes tight crushing the heat out of all living things, until all comes to rest, still and pure as the snow cloak she throws across the land. All life shivers under her gaze, and she strides with confidence from the mountain heights of her domain, down into the soft green valleys. Her breath curls like frozen dragon smoke, creeping into the far corners of the earth, under doors and widow frames, sucking the warmth out of the heart of life itself. A sweep of her ice hammer sends blizzards whirling through the air and the land holds its breath. Snow tumbles in giant feathers as though shaken from the Cailleach Bhearra’s duvet, swirling in swarms as thick as summer bees, weaving Winters shimmering cloak and Winters entrancing realm. Her cold blue power is unchallenged, and she laughs with triumph, sending all who would live scurrying for shelter from her frozen dreams.

Yet the fire of life lies hidden in tiny sparks, far from the grasping fingers of Winter, far from the frozen gaze of the Cailleach. Deep within the earth, deep within all living creatures, a core of heat and light lies waiting for the defeat of the old blue hag, by Brighde, Bride, the daughter of the sun. Her flame and her pure white wand will release the iron grip, and water and milk will flow once more throughout the land. She will fly from her prison deep in the mountains of the Cairngorms and banish Winter for another year, but the Cailleach Bhearra will fight hard and fierce before she flees. The worst of Winters storms are yet to come even as the sun grows in strength and length. The golden flames of Imbolc’s candles encourage and entice Bride to free us all from the Hag’s cold dark prison, but beware, for the Blue Hag of Winter will grow wild and angry as she loses her grip on the earth…..

Weekly Photo Challenge – Love

Swans in Holyrood

Mute Love

Easter 2010 Seaweed Heart

Natural Love in Seaweed

The weekly photo challenge is Love this week, so here are a couple of love photos. I love the closeness and affection between these birds, and apparently swans mate for life – true love. This was taken in Holyrood Park, Edinburgh. The second one was created on a coral beach in the Scottish Highlands to express my love to my husband, who was back in Edinburgh.

Snow layers on tree

This week Skinnywench set weather as her word a week photo challenge. Initially I thought I had no photos of weather, but then I remembered that snow counts as weather, and another of my elemental galleries was snow on snow, so here it is.  The first photo was taken in the depths of a bad snow storm after  week of thick snow had already fallen and I just loved the way it was piling up on the fence posts. The second two were taken in the calm after the storm.

There is something about snow which I find very soothing, the way it muffles sound, and paints the landscape with a fresh coat, free of blemishes and holes. It brings a bright under-lighting to the world it covers, and gives us a  stunning muted palette, with occasional wild splashes of colour bursting through. Hidden far below in the earth are next years seeds, waiting for the suns warmth to bring them to life. The snow makes us pause, along with the natural world around us. It slows us down, and makes us think a little before we set off on any journey. It’s also beautiful to watch curled up on the warmth of a window seat, nursing a warm up of tea, and being thankful for the glowing heat of the fire.

Look up for Angels and Unicorns

So all of these photos were taken by pointing my camera upwards towards the heavens in Edinburgh’s Old Town. I found so many interesting creatures, from angels to dragons, to unicorns. It’s simply incredible what’s up there above our heads if we just take the time to look. Old Edinburgh is packed with ancient symbols, and perhaps you can begin to see where J K Rowling got her inspiration for many of her magical creatures.

Ailsa’s weekly photo challenge up, got me searching through my photos, and Edinburgh has some fascinating rooftops to share, as seen in her post. I’ve added a few more along with some carved details from the inside and outside of St Giles. The medieval crown spire of the cathedral is incredibly delicate stone work, built in 1495, and the skyline of the surrounding buildings is so varied that it seems as though no roof pattern was ever repeated.

There is so much around us in every moment which we don’t even see, because we’re not looking carefully, or curiously enough. Being open to what’s above our heads and below our feet as we walk the earth, brings a richness and depth to our everyday life. I think of it as opening my eyes and my soul wide to the sensory world, and to each moment and each step, to each breath and each sight. No moment is ever repeated, so go on, open your eyes wide, look up to the heavens, and drink in the world.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Beyond

Plockton telephone bow 2010

Craggs beyond the telephone

Malham Cove, Yorkshire 2009

Limestone Pavement, Yorkshire

This weeks photo challenge ‘beyond’ asks us to look beyond the obvious focus. It’s amazing how much we can miss when our attention is caught on the nearest thing to us. Often the most interesting things lie just beyond our focus. It’s a great exercise in mindfulness to look for the less obvious, to try to notice the more subtle layers around us. There is so much out there around us that we never even notice.
The photo with the red telephone box makes me smile for lots of reasons. It’s in Plockton, in the Scottish Highlands, where I spent most of my childhood holidays, as my Granny owned all of the hotels in the village. However in my teens this was my point of contact with friends and boyfriends back in Edinburgh. There were no mobile phones, and any calls made from the phones in any of the hotels would have been over heard….so the call box was my private line back to Edinburgh. I was totally oblivious to the beautiful scenery behind me. The houses just beyond the callbox are on Rhu, and they are on the tip of land from where the flag and gun marking the start and finish line of the local sailing regatta are set. Way up on top of the crags you can just about make out the television mast. I can still remember the excitement when the colour TV mast went up, bringing the wonders of full spectrum vision to everyone beyond the rocky barrier of the crags.
The other photo is taken at Malham Cove in Yorkshire, and the shapes and contours of the limestone pavement are so arresting that I didn’t really notice the amazing view of the valley far below. The source of the river which flows away into the distance below, emerges from the foot of the cliff which I’m standing on to take this picture. Looking back now the view is amazing, but I missed it at the time 🙂

Round and Round

Here is my Gallery of roundness inspired by a word a week photo challenge-round

Once I started looking I found roundness everywhere, and I discovered that I definitely prefer curves to lines. They flow and just seem softer and easier to cuddle.

And as Meryl Streep said

It is well that the earth is round that we do not see too far ahead.”

Shadows in Glass

Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland

Twisted reflections

warped reflections - Haddington, East Lothian

warped tree

Haddington

Through a glass darkly

These twisted swirling reflections caught my eye as we walked past Haddington’s oldest church last weekend. It’s the Collegiate Church of St Mary the Virgin, and has been here since 1380.  Because the glass is very old it’s not machine produced and so is far from perfectly flat. This is what produces such beautifully distorted reflections of the tree behind me. I felt as though I was looking into water swirling with ink, as even a tiny shift of my position sent the reflections drifting and spinning into new shapes. It fits beautifully into Ailsas weekly challenge of glass

The windows made me think of the phrase “Through a glass darkly”, which comes from Corinthians, and highlights the poor reflections of reality we see around us. If we are mirrors in which others can see themselves, how clearly do we reflect, how much distortion do we create? The happier I am within myself, the more likely that my reflecting glass will be calm and smooth, and others will see themselves reflected more clearly. When I’m angry and unhappy with myself, my glass is rippled and unclear, and I reflect that anger and unhappiness back towards others, highlighting their flaws instead of their beauty. At time the world is a beautiful, distorted and confusing place to live.

This church was built after confusing times, when in 1356 Edward III of England burnt and looted Haddington and its monastery The Lamp of Lothian, the pilgrimage Virgin Shrine at Whitekirk, and Edinburgh itself, in revenge for the Scots taking back Berwick the previous year. Human nature is reflected poorly in the history of these times past, but human resilience is clearly reflected in the rebuilding of all that was destroyed.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Illumination

Illuminated Arches - St Giles Cathedral - Edinburgh

Illuminated Arches – St Giles Cathedral – Edinburgh

Illuminated Arches - National Portrait Gallery - Edinburgh

Illuminated Arches – National Portrait Gallery – Edinburgh

This weeks photo Challenge is  illumination.

The first two photos are illuminated interiors in central Edinburgh. They both have stunning sets of arches which are beautifully lit with some fairly antique light fittings. The ceiling of the Portrait Gallery is set with tiny golden stars within painted constellations of the zodiac, and the whole thing glitters beautifully like the night sky.

The second batch of three, are somewhat less majestic photos of a few of the many ancient winding closes which lead off the Royal Mile, in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town. They were taken just as the sun was sinking, and I love the crumbling atmosphere they evoke, of times long past.

Stone in Oceans Edge

Here is the second of my elemental galleries. Click here to see the first: Stone on Earth

These stones rest firmly, while the oceans tides swirl in and out in wild abandon. The wind and the moon can whip the salty waves into fierce frenzies, yet the stones remain serene, calmly waiting for each storm and each high tide to pass. Gradually the ever shifting motion of the sea licks the sharp edges from the steady stones, and they become smooth. Their soft curves invite us to touch them.

Perhaps I can learn the lesson of the ocean washed stone, and allow life’s storms to whirl around me, while I rest firm yet calm within its waves. There is nothing more certain than the rise and fall of the tide, and of future storms to come. However every storm, every crisis will pass, and I might find that some of my sharp edges have been smoothed in the process. By resting firmly I needn’t be picked up and smashed by the storms, and my belief that I can endure and grow whatever is going on around me may strengthen. Perhaps like the smoothed stone in the ocean I will feel easier to approach and be near, with my sharpness washed away. And perhaps I can come to trust a little more each day in life and its ever shifting tides, like the stones in the ocean’s edge.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Resolve

This year, as with every New Year, I resolve to try to live my life a little more fully. To stretch my wings a little more, and so grow into new areas. This year I hope my new camera will help me stretch my photography and creative skills further.

To be a little more awake as I walk through the world, keeping my senses open to what is unfolding around me. This also involves trying to live a little more from within my senses, rather than from within my thinking mind. Feeling the soft green earth beneath my toes, the warm sun upon my face and the fresh clear air around me.

To laugh, run and love a little more, and my dogs are the perfect teachers for this. Enjoying inhabiting and using my body, rather than just my mind.

To grow towards the light a little more, reaching up into the sunlight, while keeping my roots curled firmly into the deep nourishing earth.

To reflect a little more. I find that the more time I give myself to reflect, the happier and more settled I feel. I find my emotions are less volatile, and that life is richer and more supportive. However as usual for me, when life is going smoothly its easy to reflect and be happy, but when the challenges come along and disturb the calm waters I am easily swept away from reflection and into the drama!

To rest and relax a little more when I need to, which involves listening to my body a little more than my mind. Again the dogs, and of course the cats, are my best teachers for this endeavour.

See others ideas on Resolve here.
