Heading up North – The Cairngorms

20130329-093202.jpg

Yesterday we packed the car and headed up North, driving from Edinburgh through the wild mountainous heart of Scotland, towards Skye. As we travelled from East to West, climbing higher into the hills, the snow became thinner, and the mountain tops looked as though they had been dusted with icing sugar.

The roads are spectacular, carving their way through mountains, glens and lochs, in dizzying twists and straights which leave you wondering which direction you are pointing.

It’s been so cold the deer were low on the slopes, searching for sweet green shoots.

20130329-094037.jpg

We stopped at the Commando Memorial, which overlooks the harsh mountainous training ground used by the British Commandos during World War II. Potential candidates travelled up from as far as London, on a 12 hour train journey, and then had to walk 7 miles with all their equipment, to the training camp. Many were weeded out and set home at this point. Those who were left learned how to survive on next to nothing amid these mountains. Many current day commandos who have lost their lives in recent conflicts choose to have their ashes scattered here.

We continued on the twisting roads, hugging the sides of lochs and reservoirs, further and further west, dropping down towards the sea and warmth.

The sea is spread out in the shape of Loch Alsh, with Eileen Donnan Castle at its head, guarding the ancient passage inland. Away in the distance are the mountains of Skye. We were nearly there

The Lion and the Unicorn – Holyrood Palace

Since so many people seem to like my photos of Edinburgh, I’ve decided to do a regular Tuesday post called Tuesdays Taste of Edinburgh. Today’s collection was all taken at Holyrood Palace, at the foot of the Royal Mile.

Mythical beasts abound, and the whole area is peppered with unicorns, crowns and deer, everywhere you look. I love that my country’s symbol is a fierce magical beast, who can only be tamed by a gentle maiden. No wonder I have a vivid imagination.

It’s amazing to think of the famous feet which have walked these cobbles before me. History has literally poured out from this ancient centre of Royal power, and so have the myths and tales of magic. The Palace sits on the site of the even older Holyrood Abbey…I will take some photos of this another day…and the spot was chosen because the king, while hunting in the Royal Park stumbled upon a stag with a golden cross shining out from between his antlers. Magic sits just beneath the skin of the land here, seeping out unnoticed through the cracks and pores.

Carved into the Future

Beech Tree with Love Tatooes

Beech Tree with Love Tattoos

Close up of Love carvings

Close up of Love carvings

This beech tree stands on the edge of the woods which spill away from the parkland gardens of the old abbey. It has been here a long time. It’s roots reach down through the same rocks and soil which covered this patch of earth when Mary Queen of Scots was struggling for her throne. The sound of the River Esk has soothed this tree since it was a tiny fragile sapling just making its way in the world.

Here on the edge of the river and the woods thousands of young hands have carved their hopes of love into the bark of this tree. As the tree has grown their names and letters have stretched and cracked across the trunk, leaving its skin tattooed with promises of love, growing into the future. The wish is the growth of the tree will fuel their dreams of the future. A bit of Celtic tree magic right before our eyes. Some will be broken and some will hold, but what has been carved can’t be uncarved. Regardless, the tree continues to bear witness. I wonder how their stories are unfolding now.

Magical Levitating Dogs

Surprise!

Maisie and snowball surprise

Some of you have been saying that it looks as though I live in a magical fairy tale land….so to extend this theme I though I would share some secret footage of my magical levitating dogs. In the first shot you see Maisie gathering her power and preparing for take off.

Snowball Lift off

And here you see her hovering above the ground. Snowballs seem to boost their powers and give them special lift.

In these last shots you can see Willow showing off her specialty …..levitating out of water.

The joy and the fun the dogs express through their bodies is amazing. They stretch into every corner of their form, from the tips of their paws to the tips of their tails and noses. You can see the release of tension and stress as they jump and run for pure pleasure. Sometimes I forget to enjoy my body and its amazing range of movements. As always my dogs are great teachers, showing by example how to live fully embodied, in the sheer pleasure of a functioning physical body.

Dancing, running and jumping are pleasures to be relished while you can, because time will certainly try to erode a little of our physicality with every year which passes. So seize the moment and jump as fully as you can, into your body and all of its magical powers.

Sea Rock Tales

Buttock Rock

Buttock Rock

Yesterday I was restless and yearning for light, so I headed off to the coast. The sea usually soothes me, but instead of being drawn to the waves, it was the rocks who were calling. They were full of interesting shapes and tales, of unfinished deeds. Most were still waiting for her to come back and finish the job.

Old man rockface - pebble beach - Gullane

Pebble Beach

The whole process of rock to sand was spread out in front of me. The wind, the frost and the sea between them were splitting and grinding the earths stone body. From immovable rock to dusty sand in the blink of a century or two. Within this cycle of change what a dazzling array of colours and shapes were thrown out onto the beach in a flagrant attempt to show off. And it worked, I was captivated, and the oceans song fell on deaf ears.

Green tidal pools - Gullane

Lullaby Rocks

These liquid rocks claimed they had recently spilled onto the shore, but their green blanket of growth, whispered of millennia.

Oxo Cube Rocks - Gullane

Oxo Cube Rocks

These sandstone cubes spoke of being crumbled in huge and powerful fingers, part of a new and exciting recipe she had been trying. But she had got distracted and forgotten about them, and they felt abandoned.

Seaweed Rug - Gullane

Seaweed Rug

Parts of the exposed rock beds had been waiting so long, that the sea had soothed them to sleep with lullabies, and mother nature had tucked them in under a soft green rug.

Rock Tramlines - Gullane

Rock tram-lines

A set of stone tram-lines rolled into the ocean, part of a big plan which had long been abandoned, plagued by disputes and engineering errors.

Perch with sae view - oyster catcher, Gullane

Perch with sae view

Some rocks had forgotten the plan, and had happily adapted, producing stunning and dramatic perches for seabirds. Licked by the tides cycles and with breathtaking views across the Firth, it’s no wonder they were content with their place on the earth. I sat for a while and looked across the restless waves, feeling the firm and satisfied rocks beneath me, and letting a contented stillness fill me.

Cliff Face - Wrinkles and Dogs - Gullane 2013

Cliff Face – Wrinkles and Dogs

But the dogs were not so relaxed, and they called impatiently from the weathered rugged cliff above. The exposed swirls and layers smoothly wove a tale of the unseen motion of earth hidden beneath our feet. This rock face was in no hurry and gave up only tiny fragments of sand to the insistent wind. She hoped her looks would survive the passage of time.

Holey Rock Face - Gullane 2013

Holey Rock Face

I took one last look back, hearing the voice of a holey rock. Hundreds of smooth passages led into her mysterious depths, and a chalice of seawater lay at her feet. I promised I’d come back soon to hear her story.

March Gorse - Clifftop Gullane 2013

Spring Gorse

All along the top of the cliff path the gorse had come into bloom, filling the air with a hint of coconuts, and boldly proclaiming that Spring was here. The rocks were hidden by mother natures soil and plant blanket, but if you listen carefully you can hear the rocks whispering far below. They have stories of patience and endurance to tell those with the ears to hear.

Winter Greens

Winter Greens

Winter Greens

Continuously renewed or self renewing, evergreens have always symbolised the eternal enduring green energy of life. Mother Nature wears a patchy grey and white coat, splashed with green, during the winter months. She paints highlights on the bare grey land, using ink from her green skinned holly tree.

I thought, as Winter draws to a close, I would share some of her winter green highlights from this year. Tiny green patches on an otherwise colourless earth.  Each one a window into the pulsing green energy waiting just beneath the surface. Keepers of the light in darkness, the dark Cailleach and the Holly King, revealed in these patches.

Emotional Spring Clearance

Wood pile - Dalkeith Palace 2013

Wood pile 1

Walking in the woods after another snow flurry we came upon this unexpected pile of freshly sawn wood. This area until now had been home to a woodland adventure playground, with wooden walkways arching through the treetops connecting tree houses, wooden forts and flying foxes. I hadn’t visited for years, since my son was little, but had fond memories of the fun we had here, high up among the trees. Now it was empty, apart from this wood pile, and a wave of sadness washed through me, for all the fallen trees.

Fallen posts

Fallen posts

Then I looked a little closer, as I noticed how even and straight the trunks of these trees were. These weren’t the fallen bodies of the old adventure trees, these were old telegraph poles, lying expectantly, waiting for a new life. My emotions swiftly changed to curiosity and excitement, wondering what they were going to build here in place of the old playground.

Wood pile close up

Wood pile close up

This drew me closer to the wood, and I was struck by the beautiful array of colours on display. Yet another wave of new emotions flowed, as I gazed in wonder at the beauty of life, contained in a pile of old wood.

Thinking back over all this I’m struck by how fleeting the emotional waves were. Yet often I can feel at the mercy of strong and powerful emotions which feel as though they might overwhelm me. This is such a good reminder that in fact if we just wait and breathe, most emotions will flow through us and on. Emotions don’t need to take root within us, if we can allow them, they will flow through and the next wave will surely follow. The next wave might be something very different to what is being felt now. The next wave might be something really pleasant or fun, if we will allow it space to show itself.

If we won’t allow things to pass, we will have no space for anything new, and this applies just as much to our emotions as it does to our physical worlds. Instead of mourning for what we are losing or letting go of, perhaps we can find some curiosity or excitement about what might come to fill the spaces being left.

I read a Chinese proverb once, which I now can’t find, but the gist of it was…..you can allow and even welcome all your emotions, but you don’t need to invite them to build nests in your hair. I think this is another good reminder to let feelings flow.

Winters last bite

Winter park

Winter park

Winter swirled back with a desperate last bite, and flung snow and ice with unending fury. We are smothered again in her white cloak, colour and life bleached from sight. Most peopled groaned and sighed “not again”, but all I could see was sparkling new beauty, and amazing shadows. This wasn’t a repeat, an old rerun of an often watched show, this was brand new footage.

Daffodils in Snow

Daffodils in Snow

Look a little closer and you can see the daffodils, thrusting their green and yellow spears up through the snow. They are making their first appearance of the year on a stage of snow.

Snow trail

Snow trail

Let yourself follow this fresh trail of prints, crushed into the snow, and showing for one day only. They’ll never be seen again, and will soon have been obliterated or melted. We can let the world show us new paths each day, or we can sigh and assume we’ve seen it all before. We can let our mind be filled with assumptions that the snow is a cold, messy inconvenience….or we can open our mind and let the real experience flood in. For a while at least, it paints the familiar landscape with the sparkling magic of ‘now’.

 Crab apple blossom in snow

Crab apple blossom in snow

These fragile crab apple blossoms are positively glowing in the new snow, and are yet another reminder that time hasn’t slipped back. Things are still moving forwards towards spring and colour. I think we often let the feeling of something being repeated feel like a negative move backwards, but reality is always growing forwards into something new, backwards is just a trick our mind plays on us. Don’t let yourself be fooled. And if you don’t believe me let the new blossom tell you about the growing strength of the sun.

Celebrating a Woman’s World

I’m a bitch, I’m a lover
I’m a child, I’m a mother
I’m a sinner I’m a saint…….
I’m a little bit of everything all rolled into one. (Alanis Morissette)

We are very complex creatures, so knowing this we should just to pause and listen. Don’t assume anything you think you know about women. Stop and wonder, because you will never fathom the depths of the mystery you find before you.

Wildly complex we have so many different faces and roles within the world, that sometimes we can’t fathom ourselves. It took me years to figure out it was alright to be a devil as well as an angel, that I didn’t always have to be nice and that sometimes it was good to put myself first and be selfish! It sounds simple, but we are so conditioned that these simple ideas become complex to embody.

Anything we see in another woman lies within us also. All of us have all of these parts within, and sometimes it’s good to let the less well-known ones out to play 🙂 We have the power of a Goddess and the fragility of a new-born babe all wrapped up in one package. We are awesome!

Layers of my Neighbourhood – Edinburgh

Edinburgh is a many layered city, literally built on its history. What we can see on the surface around us is only the latest addition. You can gently peel back the surface and reveal layer upon layer of our past. St Giles Cathedral and The Royal Mile, which it sits on, is built on top of streets and closes which now lie bricked off and hidden beneath our feet. Hundreds of years ago they echoed to the sound of feet long since buried, yet the echoes still resonate through the stones and the buildings which surround us.

Beneath the human history lies the even slower history of geology, and the rocks of the earth. The Royal Mile, and the castle at its head is built on an ancient lava plug, carved bare by the passage of a glacier during the Ice Age. The shape of the heart of old Edinburgh is formed by this history, and the Royal Mile lies like the spine of a fallen dinosaur, with Holyrood Palace spilling from its tail.

This high ridge of impenetrable rock, holds the Old Town above the surrounding land, and so the city falls away from its heart in layers. This gives us streets flying over other streets, suddenly revealed by a bridge breaking the run of buildings. It gives us pavements on roofs, so you turn a corner and suddenly realise you’re not at street level anymore. It can be disorienting, but I find it enchanting, as nothing is quite what it seems here.

All of us are built on our past, and although these layers lie hidden beneath the surface they will often provoke us in expected ways. Sometimes there are painful layers in our past which we want to erase or build over, but despite our best efforts they still shape us. Perhaps like Edinburgh we can allow these old shapes to become part of the foundations of the beautiful new surface unfolding from within us each day. We can’t deleted the past, but we can move on and keep building the life we are living now. We can evolve like this ancient city, into surprising and unique individuals, despite our impenetrable ridges and forgotten dinosaurs.
